Why I Give

By including the Goldman School’s Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement in his estate, Rabbi Fred N. Reiner (B.A. ’68) joins the Goldman School of Public Policy’s Silver Society. He writes:

Rabbi Fred N. Reiner
Class of ‘68

“During and following the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, I was a campus leader in developing new programs for undergraduate education and in student-faculty relations. My undergraduate years shaped my understanding of the value of open dialogue, thoughtful discussion, and finding common ground. Over the years I have remained deeply committed to helping all people find their voice and working on behalf of human rights and social justice. I am very pleased to be able to support the work of the Goldman School’s Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement – along with my classmates – to promote these values.”

Note: When Rabbi Reiner graduated in 1968 he received Cal’s annual student leadership award for his efforts. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters degree from the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati 1973 and was ordained that same year. Rabbi Reiner has served as Senior Rabbi of Temple Sinai, Washington, DC, since July 1985.

“I contribute to the Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement through the Leroe Family Charitable Foundation because I support the goals of the Center. We seem to have lost the ability to listen with respect to opinions that differ from ours. I believe the Center will have a positive impact on the way people interact, especially in the political realm. By contributing to the Center, I am helping to make the Class of ’68 vision of a more civil society a reality.“

“Now, more than ever, there is a need to respectfully communicate in politics, in law, in business, etc. My husband Rick and I are happy to support the Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement. The Goldman School of Public Policy is a perfect fit for our Center. It allows the Class of ’68 to guide and shape where we use the funds from our generous classmates. We can make a difference in our world with the Center!“
